Cleaning the living room
The living room is where we relax, snack and socialise with friends and family. As a result, crumbs and dust gather in unexpected places.
- Communicators: A hotbed of bacteria! Clean them with a microfibre cloth soaked in disinfecting alcohol. Use a toothpick to get between the buttons.
- Back and under furniture: Even the lightest furniture accumulates a thick layer of dust over time. Try to move the seats at least once a month and tackle the floor underneath.
- Cushion covers: Throw them in the washing machine at least once a month.
- Lampshades: Use a clothes roller to remove dust quickly and efficiently. Dust the lamp itself with an old make-up or paint brush.
- Blankets: If you use them often in winter, wash them every fortnight to keep them fresh.
Cleaning the kitchen
The kitchen is a risk zone anyway when it comes to cleaning. Moisture, grease and crumbs create stubborn dirt in hidden places here.
- Cutlery and kitchen utensil drawers: Take everything out, vacuum the drawer and wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
- The back wall (Splashback): Don't forget the joints and the top of the tiles, where grease accumulates.
- Inside of cupboards: Sometimes we spill flour, sugar or oil inside the cupboard. Clean the insides regularly.
- Underside of cupboards: You'll be surprised how sticky and dusty these spots get.
- Oven grates: Soak them overnight in warm soapy water with a dash of white vinegar.
- Extractor (filters and housing): Clean the metal filters in the dishwasher or a soapy water. You can polish the outside after cleaning with a drop of baby oil for extra shine.
- Round and under the fridge: Use a flat duster to remove the dust under the fridge.
- Refrigerator shelves: Take them out and soak them in warm soapy water.
- Table and chair legs: We often wipe the table top, but turn the chairs over and clean the legs thoroughly.
- Chair upholstery: Use a suitable cleaner for fabric, or a leather cleaner for leather chairs.
- Microwave oven: Put a bowl of half water and half vinegar on full power for 5 minutes. The rising steam will loosen the caked-on dirt, after which you can easily wipe it off.
A clean bedroom
In the bedroom, many dander and dust mites collect. This calls for extra attention to textiles.
- Mattress: Turn the mattress regularly and use a thick, quality mattress protector. Refer to our tips for cleaning your mattress.
- Pillows: Use good pillow protectors. You can refresh cushions by putting them in the dryer for 10 minutes at high temperature (to kill bacteria), or steaming them. Pay close attention to the washing instructions!
- Under the bed: If possible, pull the bed out. Dust builds up quickly here.
- Drawers in cupboards and dressers: Empty them and wipe the dust off the bottom. It's a good time to throw away unnecessary items right away.
Polish the bathroom
The mirror, the toilet and the sink... All crisp and clean. But think about less obvious spots too.
- Light cords/switches: These are often touched with dirty hands. Rub white toothpaste on a dirty light cord to restore its original colour.
- Shower curtains: Most can go in the washing machine. Treat mouldy spots with some white vinegar beforehand.
- Shower door: Remove stubborn soap residue and limescale with half a lemon soaked in bicarbonate of soda.
- Shower drain: Add a large scoop of bicarbonate weekly. Use a unblocker if the drain is clogged.
- Shower head: If there is scaling, fill a plastic bag with white vinegar and tie it around the shower head so that it is fully submerged. Leave to soak for several hours or overnight.
- Bathroom waste bucket: Don't forget the inside of the bucket itself, where dirt and moisture collect.
- Under and around the sink base:This is a place where dust, water droplets and hair collect.
- Back of the toilet: An awkward corner where a lot of dust and dirt accumulates. If necessary, use a steam cleaner to loosen the dirt.
- Toilet brush and holder: Silicone brushes are the most hygienic. Clean the holder regularly with a dash of disinfectant.
- Medicine cabinet: Take everything out, throw away expired products, and wipe out the cabinet thoroughly.
