Cleaning is a skill like any other. One you need to put time and dedication into to become really good at it. As experts in efficient and thorough cleaning, we are happy to share seven common mistakes that make cleaning take more time and effort than necessary. Happy reading!

Mistake 1: Using too much detergent

The myth: More is better.

The reality: Too much detergent often leaves a sticky residue that actually attracts more dirt. Think soap scum on your floor or streaks on your windows.

The solution: Always read the instructions on the packaging and dose accurately. Often a small amount is enough for shiny results. Less really is more!

Fault 2: Brushing dirt from top to bottom

The myth:Where you start does not matter.

The reality: If you start at the bottom, dirt from higher surfaces will still fall onto your already cleaned areas. Double the work!

The solution: Always start at the top and work your way down. Start by getting rid of the cobwebs and dust on the ceiling. Then dust your cupboards, then clean your table and work your way down to the floor. This way, the dust and dirt that has settled will fall onto the surfaces yet to be cleaned.

Mistake 3: Moving the hoover too fast

The myth: Vacuuming quickly saves time.

The reality: A hoover needs time to vacuum up dirt, dust and hair effectively. Moving too quickly results in half a job.

The solution: Move your vacuum slowly and evenly over the surface, both forwards and backwards. Give the suction a chance to do its job. Focus on smaller sections at a time.

Mistake 4: Using the same cloth for everything

The myth: One cloth for all jobs.

The reality: Bacteria and dirt spread from one place to another at lightning speed. Think of a toilet brush for the sink, but with a cloth.

The solution: Use different cloths for different rooms and tasks. A separate cloth for the bathroom, another for the kitchen and another for furniture and glass. Wash your cloths regularly at high temperature. Colour coding can help with this!

Fault 5: Cleaning windows on a sunny day

The myth: Sunlight helps you see everything.

The reality: Direct sunlight causes your cleaner to dry too quickly, leaving streaks and smudges.

The solution: Polish your windows on an overcast day or when the sun is not shining directly on the windows. Use a good window cleaning product and a microfibre cloth or wiper for streak-free results.

Fault 6: Rinse cutting boards only

The myth: Rinsing is enough.

The reality: Especially wooden cutting boards are porous and can retain bacteria even after a quick rinse.

The solution: Clean cutting boards thoroughly with hot water and soap after each use. Disinfect them regularly with a diluted bleach solution or vinegar. Wooden cutting boards can also be rubbed with mineral oil once in a while to protect them.

Fault 7: Not cleaning your cleaning utensils regularly

The myth:My utensils are clean because they clean.

The reality: Dirty sponges, mops and hoover filters spread bacteria and make your home less clean than you think.

The solution: Wash mops and microfibre cloths after every use. Clean your hoover filter regularly and replace the bag on time. Disinfect sponges by putting them in the dishwasher or heating them briefly in the microwave (provided they do not contain metal).
