1. Check the label
Every coat is different. Wool, down or a technical outdoor fabric require a specific approach. Check the washing instructions first. Is there a cross through the wash label? Then take the coat to the dry cleaner. Is it allowed in the machine? Then follow the steps below.
2. Preparation is half the battle
Close all zips, buttons and Velcro fasteners. This prevents the fabric from being damaged while turning. Turn the jacket inside out and remove any detachable fur collars or hoods.
3. The right washing technique
- Down: Wash a down coat with a few clean tennis balls in the drum. This keeps the down from clumping and retains its volume.
- Wool: Use a wool wash programme and a special wool detergent. Centrifuge on a low speed to avoid distortion.
- Synthetic: Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener; this can damage the jacket's water-repellent coating.
4. Be patient with drying
Never hang your coat directly in the sun or over a hot radiator. Wool is best dried lying down on a towel to avoid stretching. A down coat can often be tumble-dried (with those same tennis balls!), but always check the label.
5. Store smartly
Never store your coat in a plastic bag; the fabric needs to be able to "breathe" to avoid musty odours or mould. Use a cotton garment bag and hang the coat on a wide, sturdy hanger so that the shoulders do not deform.
