1. Invest in several quality floor mats
One mat is not enough. Create a clean area in three steps:
- Outer mat (The big scraper): A rough, sturdy mat with deep grooves (such as coconut fibre or rubber) to scrape the coarsest dirt, sand and mud from shoes.
- Inner mat (The moisture absorber): A large, absorbent textile mat (preferably one you can wash) that lies directly inside the door. This traps slush and residual moisture from snow and rain.
- Have a third mat or runner: If necessary, lay a long runner in the hallway. This extends the drying zone and protects the floor deeper into the house.
2. Keep a fixed spot for (wet) shoes
The biggest problem? Wet shoes lying around everywhere.
- Use a drip tray: Place a rubber or plastic drip tray (such as a planter) where everyone puts wet boots and shoes. This catches the slush and salt residue, preventing it from spilling onto your floor.
- Set them on a rack: A vertical shoe rack or shelf for wet shoes allows air to circulate around them, drying them faster without damaging the floor.
3. Keep coats & umbrellas away from the floor
Wet textiles are a source of moisture.
- Drip zone for umbrellas: Use a special umbrella tray with a closed bottom. Place this on the drip tray or a tiled floor so that the water does not get onto the parquet or carpet.
- Make sure there are enough hooks: Hang wet coats, scarves and hats on well-ventilated hooks. Avoid hanging them wet against the wall, which can lead to moisture stains.
4. Use vinegar against salt deposits on hard floors
Pech, salt or brine got on your tile or laminate floor after all. That leaves ugly white circles.
- Solution: Make a mild cleaner with one part white vinegar and two parts warm water.
- Treatment: Mop the entrance hall with this. The vinegar neutralises the salt and dissolves the white circles. Post-mopping with clean water makes the floor shine again.
Please note:Do not use vinegar on natural stone without first checking that it is safe to do so!
5. Schedule a short, daily cleaning round
In winter, it is essential to clean up the worst damage daily.
- Mop or squeegee: Use a small squeegee or microfibre mop to quickly soak up melt water.
- Remove the sand: A hand hoover or a dustpan and brush for the sand that collects around the mats.
