Phase 1: take immediate action
The golden rule with any stain? Speed! But take note:
- Dab, don't rub: Immediately grab a roll of kitchen paper. Gently press the liquid so that the paper soaks it up. By rubbing, you push the stain deeper into the fabric and destroy the fibres.
- Cold water: Do you have a stain of organic origin (such as blood or egg)? Always rinse with cold water. Hot water cooks the proteins in the stain to your clothes, so they will never go away.
Phase 2: do a smart check
Before tackling the stain with all kinds of remedies, take a moment to do these checks:
- Do the invisible test: Every product is a risk for the colour. Always test your (home and kitchen) remedy on an inconspicuous spot first, such as the inside of a hem.
- Know your material: Silk and wool are the divas among fabrics. They absolutely cannot stand soda, enzymes or harsh agents. Only use specific products or leave it to a professional dry cleaner.
- Products are not a cocktail: Never use different staining agents interchangeably. Chemical reactions can bleach or damage the fabric beyond repair.
Phase 3: time to carefully remove the stain
Do you think the stain is gone? Be careful with the final steps:
- Wait with the washing machine: Don't just throw a stained blouse into the drum. If the stain is not fully treated, the heat of the machine can permanently fix the stain.
- The dryer is off limits: Have you washed the stain but still see a light shadow? Never put the garment never in the tumble dryer. The intense heat literally bakes the stain in. Let it air dry and only then see the result.
