At TRIXXO we know how important proper maintenance is for an efficient and sustainable household. That's why we are happy to explain why descaling is so crucial and how to keep your appliances in top condition.
What is limescale anyway?
Lime scale is caused by minerals, especially calcium and magnesium, naturally present in tap water. When water is heated or evaporated, these minerals remain behind and form a hard, white deposit: limescale. The amount of limescale depends on the 'hardness' of the water in your area. The harder the water, the faster lime builds up.
The impact of limescale on your household appliances
The effects of limescale are often bigger than you think:
1. Higher energy consumption
Lime is a poor conductor of heat. When there is a layer of lime on the heating element of your kettle, coffee maker or washing machine, the appliance has to work harder and use more energy to heat the water to the desired temperature. This directly results in a higher energy bill. Think of a jacket around your heating element: the heat has a harder time getting through.
2. Reduced performance
- Coffee maker: Lime deposits can impede water flow and lower the temperature of the water, negatively affecting the taste of your coffee. Your cup of coffee will be less hot and less flavoursome.
- Water kettle: The water takes longer to boil and the kettle looks dirty.
- Washing machine and dishwasher: Lime deposits reduce the effectiveness of detergents, making your laundry less clean and your dishes streaky coming out of the machine. Moreover, it can clog sprinklers and pipes.
- In iron: Lime deposits can clog the steam holes, causing your iron to produce less steam and even leave stains on your clothes.
3. Shorter lifespan of your appliances
In the long run, limescale can cause serious damage to internal parts of your appliances, such as pumps, valves and heating elements. This can lead to expensive repairs or, worse, the need to replace your appliance early. Regular descaling significantly extends the life of your appliances.
How and how often should you descale?
The frequency of descaling depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the appliance. A general guideline is:
- Water boiler and coffee maker: Every 1 to 3 months, or when you notice it takes longer to boil water or make coffee. For this, use vinegar, citric acid or special descaling agents.
- Washer and dishwasher: Every 3 to 6 months. Empty a cup of vinegar in the detergent drawer of your washing machine and run an empty, hot wash. For the dishwasher, you can use vinegar or a special cleaning product in an empty cycle.
- In iron: Consult your iron's manual. Many modern irons have a self-cleaning function. Otherwise, you can use vinegar and water.
Tip: Always refer to your specific appliance's manual for the recommended descaling method and agents.
Descaling your household appliances is a small effort with big benefits. It saves energy, improves the performance of your appliances and extends their lifespan. A smart investment in your household and your wallet!
