Since their introduction in 2015, flexi-jobs have been a hit. Not illogically, as the system offers a tax-advantaged way to earn a penny on the side. Last year, the government firmly expanded the authorised sectors. But which ones are they? Below, we list the most popular sectors so you know what the possibilities are.

What began in 2015 as an incentive for retirees and people already working 80% to earn tax-advantaged additional income in the hospitality industry has since grown into a broad-based system. Over the years, the regulations have expanded, with more sectors given the option of flexi-jobbers. Which ones? You can read about them below.

Horeca: dishwasher, waiter, bartender, kitchen help ...

Horeca remains the undisputed king of flexi jobs. Without a doubt, the horeca (restaurants, cafés, hotels, caterers) is the sector where you will find the most flexi-jobs. The dynamic nature of this industry, with peak times at weekends, evenings and during events, makes flexible workers indispensable.

  • Typical jobs: Dishwasher, waiter, room assistant, bar assistant, kitchen help, receptionist.
  • Why here? The hospitality industry is in constant need of extra hands to serve customers smoothly and keep the service running, without exploding fixed staff costs.

Retail: shop assistant, cashier, shelf filler ...

The retail is another big player in the flexi-market. Think supermarkets, clothing shops, DIY shops and other retail outlets. Especially during busy periods such as weekends, holidays and bargain periods, demand for flexi-jobbers is high.

  • Typical jobs: Shop assistant, cashier(star), shelf filler, warehouse assistant (in-store).
  • Why here? The need for flexible deployment is high to accommodate fluctuations in customer visits and ensure optimal service.

Cleaning sector: cleaning assistants, domestic helpers ...

The cleaning sector, including services via service vouchers, is increasingly embracing the flexi-job system - as we at TRIXXO know all too well. This presents an excellent opportunity for those who like to roll up their sleeves and seek flexible working hours, often with a personalised approach.

  • Typical positions: Cleaning assistant, domestic help (via service vouchers), cleaner in companies or at events.
  • Why here? The demand for flexible cleaning services is high, both for individuals and companies, and flexi-jobs offer a perfect solution for this.

Sports & culture: receptionist, events, evening and weekend work ...

These sectors include fitness centres, sports clubs, amusement parks, cinemas, theatres and event agencies. They often run at specific hours or are seasonal, making them ideal for flexi jobs.

  • Typical jobs: Sports hall supervisor, cinema/theatre box office assistant, theme park employee, event assistant.
  • Why here? Staff demand is often peak, e.g. during evening shows, weekend matches or seasonal activities.

Care: support roles

Since more recently, the option for flexi-jobs has been extended to certain roles in the care sector. Although this is more strictly regulated, it opens doors for those who have experience in the care sector and want to assist flexibly.

  • Typical jobs (specific): Certain support roles in residential care centres, hospitals, or assisting with care tasks. The conditions here are often more specific and require relevant experience or training.
  • Why here? To address staff shortages and provide flexible support in the critical care sector, especially during busy shifts or holiday periods.
