Successful job search in 2025: our application tips

Although there are currently some 170,000 vacancies in Belgium (source: StatBel), the labour market seems to have cooled down a bit compared to a few years ago. Still, there remains plenty of work. But how do you best apply for the job of your dreams? Our experts are happy to share their application tips!

Don't have your job application written by AI tools like ChatGPT

We understand how tempting it is to have your CV and cover letter written by ChatGPT. However, employers and recruiters want to see that you have made an effort and are genuinely interested in their organisation and the specific position. As more and more job applicants make full use of AI, you can be the human among the machines.

  • Deep into the company: research the company culture, recent projects and the organisation's mission. Incorporate this knowledge into your cover letter.
  • Speak the right language: Use industry and company terminology. Show that you understand the industry.
  • Link to your skills: Describe concretely how your experience and skills match the requirements of the vacancy. Give examples of previous successes.

The 'perfect employee' does not exist

Let's face it: even if you have years of experience in a particular job, there are still things in every job posting that are new to you. That's not a bad thing and feel free to say so. Perfection does not exist and companies and recruiters realise this. However, they are looking for real people with growth potential, not for an ideal image that does not exist anyway.

  • Demonstrate your authentic self: recruiters want to see the real you. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through, even in a formal job application.
  • Mention your weaknesses as learning opportunities: honestly name a development point and explain what concrete steps you are taking to work on it.
  • Normalise and frame breaks in your CV: A gap in your CV due to travel, study or illness, for example, does not have to be a disadvantage, but needs explanation. Frame these periods positively as moments of personal growth, development of new skills, or gaining unique life experiences.

Update your profile on LinkedIn

There was a time when LinkedIn was only used by managers and the highly educated. But that time is over. Everyone is on LinkedIn these days, and so are you. Put time into beautifying your profile and make sure everything is up to date.

Also useful: the 'open to work' function. This will get your profile in front of professional recruiters.

Build your personal network

Although applying online is easier than ever, personal networking remains invaluable. Many jobs are filled via-via, even before they are officially advertised.

  • Stay in touch: maintain your existing professional relationships. A simple message to ask how things are going can already open doors.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help: let your network know you are looking for a new challenge. People are happy to help, especially if you are clear about what you are looking for.

Develop your soft skills

Technical skills (hard skills) are important, but soft skills such as adaptability, critical thinking and emotional intelligence are becoming increasingly crucial.

  • Define your soft skills:how adaptable are you? Can you collaborate well? Are you a problem solver? Give concrete examples in your CV and during job interviews.
  • Take continuing education courses: Take online courses or workshops to further develop your soft skills and clearly indicate this in your CV. Platforms such as Coursera, edX or even local VDAB/Forem initiatives offer plenty of opportunities here.
